Course Information

The following is information that concerns students enrolled into section 06. Again, it is important for you, to check the general website for Math 103 here.

General Policies

The Duke Community Standard is taken very seriously on Duke campus, and you are all reminded to make certain you are familiar with it. In this course some collaboration is allowed and encouraged, but of course your work must be entirely your own. Here are some specific comments about the graded items in this class:

Attendance at all lectures will not be part of your grade for the course, but if you miss a lecture, it is your responsibility to catch up on the topics that you missed. You should keep in mind that in this course, the material builds on itself; if you miss some of the material, subsequent lectures will seem more difficult to you.

Absences from exams will be excused only for reasons such as serious illness or appropriate official university activities. In either case, a written notification from the dean is required. In the case of illness, this must be done with the Short-term Illness Notification form. In the case that an absence from an exam is excused, the grade will be determined based on your performance on the subsequent exams, including the final exam for the course, and relative to the performance of the rest of the class on those items.

Students should note that use of the Short-term Illness Notification form is subject to the Duke Community Standard, discussed and linked above. In particular, it is expected every student will take reasonable responsibility for his/her own health at least to the extent that such health is needed to be able to participate in classes.

A note on email, Blackboard, and other means of electronic communication: Email is going to be a very important way for me to contact you. In one hand, scores of exams and homeworks will not be divulged via email, but in the other hand problem sets for homework and/or other important information regarding our class will be divulged via email. Blackboard might be used to divulge grades and scores, since it complies with the University and Federal regulations that protect your privacy as a student.

Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the Student Disability Access Office, in order to make the appropriate accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. In addition, any students with special needs or who require any type of assistance or special arrangements should contact the instructor.

All undergraduate students should be aware that the Academic Resource Center will be offering its services. These services will be offered at no charge, and include the Peer Tutoring Program.

Exams, Homeworks, and Grading

Final grades for the class will be determined by the total number of points earned in the class. These points are given based on performance on the items below:

  1. Three midterm exams: is 30% of final grade. It will cover the material discussed in class up to the day before the exam.
  2. One block final exam: is 50% of final grade. It covers all the topics discussed throughout the semester.
  3. Weekly homeworks: is 20% of final grade. It will be a subset of the problems assigned for each section in the syllabus, and any additional problem assigned in class.
The tentative/official dates for the midterm exams are:
  1. Thursday September 29, 2011 from 8:30am to 9:45am (official).
